B   Brief Auto-biography

Prof Jacinta Ndambuki is an Associate Professor of Applied Linguistics in the Department of Literary and Communication Studies (LITCOMS), School of Humanities and Development Studies (SHDS) at Laikipia University (LU), Kenya, where she teaches English language and linguistics as well as communication courses to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. She was the Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic, Research and Student Affairs (Ag. DVC ARSA) at Laikipia University in 2023, during which, as a member of the Senate and the University Management Board, she provided strategic direction in the academic division in terms of collaborative research, academics, curriculum review, student mentorship, and staff capacity building. The University signed MoUs for collaboration with several institutions, among them; Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis (KIPPRA), Alliance for Biodiversity International (CIAT), and the T3 Alliance. She supported CBC reforms by appointing the Competency-Based Curriculum Implementation Committee to spearhead the retooling of lecturers and preparedness for CBE at the University. She was also the Acting Dean of the School of Humanities and Development Studies in 2021.

Previously, as the Director of Graduate School and the Chair of the Board of Postgraduate Studies (2016-2019), Prof. Ndambuki spearheaded the development of the Postgraduate Studies Policy, the Intellectual Property Rights Policy, and the successful implementation of the Commission for University Education (CUE) reforms. She is the Academic Leader for the Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics Programme in the Department and has served as a member of several Committees of the university among them; Ad Hoc Committee on Development of Guidelines on the Engagement of staff on Sabbatical Leave, Post-Doctoral Studies and Adjunct Academic Roles-January 2025; Working Group on Formulation of Strategy on Operationalization of University Niche 2024; Ad Hoc Committee for Development of Guidelines on Academic Publications; Chair, Graduation Committee 11th Graduation 2023; Chair, 5th Biennial International Conference Organizing Committee (2023); Committee on review of Postgraduate Studies Policy; Ad Hoc Shortlisting Committee for Full Professors 2022; Chair, Ad Hoc Shortlisting Committee for Associate Professor 2022;  Ad Hoc Shortlisting Committee for Senior lecturer 2022; and Ad. Prof Ndambuki’s scholarly journey at the university spans over 30 years; when upon completion of her undergraduate studies, Egerton University awarded her a merit scholarship in 1993 to pursue her master’s degree, after which they hired her as an Assistant lecturer in 1997, then later as a lecturer in 2006 and as Senior Lecturer in 2011. She joined the University of the Witwatersrand - South Africa, for her PhD studies in 2005, where she excelled and was awarded several merit scholarships among them, the University Council Merit Award (2009), Doris and Harold Tothill Prestige Scholarship (2008); National Research Foundation (NRF) South Africa Overseas Travel Grant, Andrew Mellon Foundation Postgraduate Mentoring Award with Research Mentor Prof. Hilary Janks (2006-2008); and the Small Grants for Thesis Writing - Council for the Development of Social Science (CODESRIA, 2006). She graduated in 2010, and upon successful completion of her PhD studies and return to Kenya, she was appointed as the Founding Director - Research, Extension and Consultancy (2010-2013) at Laikipia University. During her term, the University won an award for the installation of the Essential Electronic and Agricultural Library (TEEAL) at an initial cost of USD 5000 and library updates for 17 years at a total cost of USD I million in January 2012. She oversaw the introduction of two scholarly Journals for Laikipia University: Laikipia University Journal of Social Science, Education and Humanities (JSSEH) and Journal of Science and Applied Technology (JSAT). She was appointed Associate Professor of Applied Linguistics in 2018.

Prof Ndambuki is a prolific writer who not only mentors the staff and students in academic writing but has also published several papers in refereed journals and several book chapters. She is a volunteer peer reviewer for the Applied Linguistics Journal and has been a series editor for the Laikipia University journal, JSSEH. She has attended several conferences, workshops, and seminars. She has served as an External Examiner in two Kenyan universities. She is a member of CODESRIA, Global Writers Link (founding member), now the International Writers’ Alliance, and the International Association of Applied Linguistics (AILA) Africa Research Network. She participates in environmental conservation in line with the University’s vision to nurture and transform the world. She is a founding member of the Eco Green Initiative (EGI) (a Community-Based Organization), which aims to ensure an ecologically green environment through sustainable afforestation in Makueni County, Kenya. She enjoys mentoring young people and strongly believes in her students’ unique and innovative abilities. In terms of higher degree supervision and mentorship, she has supervised the completion of several Master's and PhD students.
