International Women’s Day Celebration at Nyahururu Women’s Prison

Laikipia University celebrated the International Women’s Day at the Nyahururu Women’s Prison on 7th March 2025. The international event, whose theme was “Accelerate Action,” was facilitated by the Directorate of Research Human Rights and Gender in collaboration with the Pearl Hospital, Nyahururu, and the Kenya Human Rights, Laikipia Regional Office. Laikipia University donated foodstuff to the inmates, while the medical department, led by Mr. Jonathan Kiptolong, provided medical screening services.

The event aimed at celebrating the strength, resilience, and achievements of women around the world while also reflecting on the unique challenges faced by women, especially those incarcerated in prison.

Ms. Ruth Getobai, Regional Human Rights Officer, Laikipia County, emphasized the importance of addressing the needs of incarcerated women, advocating for their rights, and pushing for reforms in the criminal justice system, as this would be a real-time changer.

Dr. Rose Njoroge, the day's chief guest and the Laikipia University staff counsellor, emphasized rehabilitation, education, skill building, and mental health support as the key pillars that can transform lives. She also stressed the need to accelerate action, calling on governments, communities, and institutions to focus on creating systems that empower women, since “Women are not just defined by their pasts, but by their futures”.  Through creative expression, empowerment, and a commitment to personal growth, each woman can rise from the ashes of their past mistakes.

The event ended on a divine note as Fr. Maina, from the Nyahururu Catholic Diocese, encouraged the women to always rejoice in the Lord and find happiness wherever they are.
