Brief Auto-biography of the Staff

Mr. John Kinyua Mbaka is a long serving, experienced and dedicated administrator and member of staff at Laikipia University having begun his career in December, 2005 as an Administrative Assistant - Grade 8 and rising through the ranks to his current designation, Snr. Assistant Registrar - Grade 13.

Mr. Mbaka is quit versed on matters Administration, Human Resource, Planning and Performance Management with a keen eye on Productivity - the new world’s workforce order focused on attention management and effective use of innovation and resources to increase value added content of goods and services. He has served in various departments within the University over the years namely: School of Education; Administration & Human Capital; Nyahururu Town Campus; Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics, Research & Students Affairs): Directorate of Postgraduate Studies; Directorate of External Linkages; Directorate of Resource Mobilization & Investments; Library; and currently the Directorate of Planning & Performance Management.

His strong organizational and interpersonal skills work well for him in the execution of his day to day mandate as well as the various assignments within the University and also outside the University. Among the milestones in his service are: served as a Champion & Auditor in the first LU ISO 9001:2007 certification; served as the designate Administrator during the setting up of LU Graduate School; team player in the commercialization of the Laikipia water bottling project; served in the various University Policy draft committees namely - Income Generating Units Policy, Resource Mobilization and Investments Policy, National Cohesion & Integration Policy, Ethics and Anti-corruption Policy and the Occupational Health and Safety Policy as well as membership to the committees tasked with the development of LU’s Wildlife and Nature Conservancy Business plan and the Staff Performance Appraisal Tool and the Strategic Plan 2023-2027 launch committee.

Together with colleagues at the Directorate of Planning & Performance Management, there mandate is the mainstreaming of the Planning and Performance Management function of the University. This way, Monitoring the rolling out of the University Strategic Plans and the Bi-annual plans and preparation of Performance Contracts in accordance with the guidelines provided by the relevant government agencies as well as monitoring its implementation as guided by the University Management Board and Council.

In addition to his day to day engagements at Laikipia University, Mr. Mbaka too is a member of the Board of Trustees, Egerton University Retirement Benefits Scheme Board (EURBS) and serves as a member in two committees: Investments & Finance committee and Audit & Risk committee.

Mr. Mbaka also serves as the Patron to the Laikipia University SEALS Club and the Equity Wings to Fly -Laikipia University Chapter both registered student’s clubs within the University.

As a private citizen, Mr. Mbaka has been engaged in various consultancy works in the areas of Business Development, Strategic Planning, Project Planning & Management and Human Capital Development not to mention Part-time teaching in the field of Business and Management Science.

Mr. Mbaka is a member of the Institute of Human Resource Management (IHRM) and the Kenya Institute of Management (KIM).
