Other services/consultancy work
The Department in collaboration with other partners is establishing an Innovation Incubation Centre. The Innovation centre will spur, incubate and equip innovators, researchers and students with the relevant knowledge, skills and values necessary to successfully convert ideas into solutions and enterprises for valued transformation of society.
ICT SECTION
ICT is a service section under the Department of Computing and Informatics charged with a number of ICT related responsibilities that offer services to both students and staff on ICT issues.
Using Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), Laikipia university has embarked on a rapid expansion strategy aimed at making it a world-class university and expanding its course offerings.
While the focus was initially on enhancing the ICT infrastructure, hardware, and administration systems, the university has progressed to using technology for e-learning. LU has introduced e-learning using the Moodle platform. Due to the Covid – 19 pandemic, which necessitated heavy reliance on technology, over 100 lecturers were trained on the Moodle e-platform, and all new students were trained in computer literacy, Internet technology, and the Moodle platform.
The Department offers several services namely:
1. Student Portal
The student portal is a resource where a student is able to self-access their:
- Personal Information
- Academic Information
- Unit registration
- Financial information.
For a student to access this information, he/she needs to have an account on the portal. The portal is accessible via a provided link http://portal.laikipia.ac.ke
Upon opening the link a new student is directed to first create an account to proceed, steps on how to go about the portal are provided in the Laikipia university website under RESOURCES then Students Portal Manual Guide.
2. Website:
The official university website is www.laikipia.ac.ke. The website is a useful resource that students interact with often. All official communication is posted on the university website and students are therefore encouraged to visit it frequently. Students are also encouraged to take time to familiarize themselves with all the information on the website to gain insights and better understanding of Laikipia University.
Various resources are accessible through the website such as; students’ email, students’ portal, teaching and examinations timetables, downloads, e-resources, university contacts, LU Info Point, speeches, journals and publications among others.
The University website is managed by the ICT section and it also features students’ activities and innovations. Additionally, all students are provided with an official university email to assist them in communication and their learning activities.

3. Internet Services
ICT offers internet services to students and staff both cabled and Wi-Fi Hotspots. Internet services offered are purely to assist students in their study and research work.
The University’s internet last-mile infrastructure is on fiber optic. This has supplied internal LAN back-bone with gigabit bandwidth LAN speed, improving internet access data rate. It is with the aim of keeping up with the digital age that the University has set up several University Internet WI-FI (Hotspots) and still adding more with the aim of covering the entire university.
