The Laikipia University Staff Housing Cooperative Society held its Member Education Day at Mandela Hall on 5th February 2025.
The cooperative society, launched in 2011, has 167 members drawn from the university's staff and is led by Dr. Emily Cheshari.
The cooperative society's core mandate has been to empower Laikipia University employees by pooling resources to buy land and affordable housing.
Since its inception, the cooperative society has also empowered members to settle in houses within gated communities with adequate security and all the required amenities. Dignified housing is core to the mental well-being of every employee, and the cooperative society has spearheaded this effort.
Current Key Projects Include:
- Milimani Gardens - Nyahururu
- Gicheha Project- Nakuru
- Ngata Ridge Project - Nakuru
- Sobea Ridge - Nakuru
To make profits, the cooperative society has been buying land at a cheaper price and selling it at a profitable price after some time. The profits are shared by members, leading to their financial stability. It is an investment that secures the future for all its members.
The education session underscored the impacts of housing cooperatives on personal growth. This is the reason why more staff members join such societies for their benefit and a secure future. The event had other partners like Equity Bank, who shared their products while describing how they could collaborate with the cooperative society’s members for economic sustainability.
