Laikipia University led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kibett Rotich, has signed an Affiliation Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Garissa University on 10th May, 2022, an event that was held at Laikipia University. Garissa University was represented by Prof. Julius M. Huho, Director Research, Post Graduate, Linkages and Community Outreach.
The National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI) has accredited Laikipia University so as to fulfil its mandate of ensuring quality Research. Garissa made an application and were accepted by Laikipia University to be an affiliate institution.
Laikipia University and Garissa University are Public Universities established under the Universities Act No. 42 of 2012.
The objective of this MoU is to establish a framework for cooperation between the two parties for use of the LUIREC services in vetting and reviewing research proposals from Garissa University for fulfillment of ethical requirements research especially involving human subjects.
The MOU will be implemented by the Laikipia University Institutional Ethics Research Committee (LU-IERC) and the Garissa University Directorate of Research, Post Graduate, Linkages and Community Outreach (GaU)
The parties shall be obligated to:
Laikipia University:
- Receive research proposals for review and approval within the parameters.
- Regularly and timely communicate its decisions and any changes to the rules and regulations governing Institutional Ethics Review.
- Training staff of Garissa University on Institutional Ethics Review rules and procedures.
Garissa University:
- Submit and/or forward the applications for review within the prescribed timelines.
- Pay the prescribed review fees. The rates applicable to LU shall equally apply to GaU.
- Nominate staff for training on Institutional Ethics Review rules and procedures.
The two institutions made a commitment to implement the MOU with an aim of serving the students, researchers and members of staff.
