On 25th March 2025, Laikipia University and Groots Kenya launched a ground-breaking strategic partnership during a vibrant and well-attended event that highlighted their shared commitment to empowering communities and advancing sustainable development. The ceremony, which took place at the university, brought together key stakeholders, including the university management, staff, and distinguished guests from Groots Kenya led by the Executive Director, Ms. Rachel Kagoiya alongside grassroots champions who play a pivotal role in community development.
Prior to the launch, the team paid a courtesy call to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kibett Rotich where they signed a Memorandum of Understanding. The Vice Chancellor lauded the Groots Kenya organization for its resounding determination in climate action and women empowerment. Groots Kenya, a renowned organization that advocates for the rights and welfare of grassroots women and communities, will work closely with Laikipia University to foster collaborative efforts in climate action, research, community empowerment and outreach, industry linkages, and policy advocacy.
During the event, the leadership of both institutions emphasized the importance of the partnership in bridging the gap between academia and grassroots initiatives. Groots Kenya’s grassroots champions shared personal stories, highlighting the challenges and triumphs of working within local communities, while the university’s representatives underscored the institution’s dedication to fostering a practical, impact-driven approach to education and community service.
The event featured interactive discussions, donations of fruit tree seeds and seedlings, farm implements, and launch of a tree nursery at the university farm which marks a significant milestone in both organizations' efforts to build a more inclusive and sustainable future. With this partnership, Laikipia University and Groots Kenya are set to embark on a journey that will not only enrich the academic experience of the student fraternity but also create tangible benefits for the communities they serve.
The collaboration will also spearhead innovative solutions to challenges faced at the grassroots level, particularly in areas of education, women empowerment, and community leadership. The partnership is a testament of the two institutions’ dedication to empowering communities through knowledge-sharing, skill development, and collective action.
The event not only celebrated a new chapter in the two organizations’ shared mission but also marked a significant step towards fostering a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable future for all. The Department of Planning and Performance Management (DPPM) led by Dr. Samuel Onyuma was recognized by the Vice-Chancellor for steering the partnership.
