Laikipia University Career Mentorship at Njonjo Girls’ and Leshau Boys’ High School

Laikipia University had successful Career Guidance and Mentorship sessions at Njonjo Girls’ High School and Leshau Boys’ High School on 20th July, 2024. High school students are the main prospective stakeholders of Laikipia University as they transition to universities in coming years. In line with its mandate, the University continues to engage with secondary schools to offer career advice and mentorship to students to prepare them for various career paths available in higher education.
While mentoring Njonjo Girls’ students, Prof. Robert Mwebi, Registrar (Academic Affairs) encouraged them to work hard and lead a purpose-driven life in order to achieve their career goals. Additionally, he advised them to be flexible in career choices in order to meet their objectives. He explained how career flexibility had worked for him after high school which had enabled him to become the person he is today and so should be their case.

During the event, Laikipia University showcased its academic programmes while also responding to queries from students. Students were eager to know various subjects and grade requirements for various programmes offered in the University. Another particular question that stood out was “What they needed to pursue at the university in order to become lecturers.”

Njonjo Girls High School is a girls national school located in Igwamiti ward, Laikipia County and it boasts of having over 1400 students drawn from across the country.

Elsewhere, a team led by Dr. John Wahome, Director (Directorate of Examinations and Time-tabling) represented Laikipia University at Leshau Boys’ High School Career Guidance and Mentorship Day. The School, led by its alumni, had organized a Mentorship and Career guidance forum and invited Laikipia University to talk to the students on among other issues; Career choices, available careers in the changing world, and requirements for various academic programmes in the University. The form four students were also guided on what to expect once they joined university. The Director emphasized on colleges and TVET Institutes such as Laikipia University TVET Institute as alternative pathways to one's career choice. Such sessions are crucial in exposing students to a diverse range of career choices and helping them make informed decisions in line with their passion and career aspirations.
Other universities and TVET institutions present during the Njonjo Girls Career Guidance and Mentorship include, Kabarak University, Mount Kenya University, Catholic University of Eastern Africa, The Kiambu National Polytechnic (KIST) and The Rift Valley National Polytechnic (RVIST).
