Higher Education Loans Board Officials’ Visit to Laikipia University

Officials from the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) and Universities Fund paid a courtesy call to the Office of the Vice Chancellor on 24th September, 2024.

Their visit aimed at sensitising students and the administration on the student-centred New Funding Model (NFM) while also addressing emerging issues in loans and scholarships applications, allocations and disbursements. This has been a topic of discussion in the country in recent days and therefore the initiative was also geared towards reviewing the emerging trends, informed by the dynamic students’ and stakeholders' needs.

Correct information during application is key to accurate banding which ultimately enhances smooth learning for students. There have been enormous cases of students complaining of wrong banding while in reality, some of them didn’t participate in the verification of the accuracy of information submitted during loans and scholarships application.

The officials implored our students to own the Higher Education Financing application process by actively participating in the process and not letting it be handled by cyber cafe vendors alone. They were also urged to appeal in case they felt aggrieved by their respective bands.

Mr. Samuel Otieno, an official from the Universities Fund also noted that some of Laikipia University students were yet to receive their past semester's finances but the matter was being handled for a quick resolution. The officials also had a successful forum with the students at Vision 2030 Hall where they listened and responded to their queries.

Laikipia University is committed to the betterment of its students' welfare and that is why the institution had to engage such stakeholders.

The meeting was chaired by Prof. Charles Nguta - Ag. Vice Chancellor, the Office of Registrar Academic Affairs led by Prof. Robert Mwebi, Prof. Felicia Yieke - Director Corporate Affairs, Mr. Geofrey Kiprotich Langat - Finance Officer, the Office of Dean of Students led Ms. Beatrice Yogo, and Mr. Michael Kiplagata - HELB.
