From 5th to 8th May 2025, the Nelson Mandela Hall was full of activity as Laikipia University took a decisive step towards institutional transformation. The Business Process Re-engineering (BPR) training, hosted by the ICT Department in partnership with the Ministry of Public Service and Human Capital Development, marked a critical milestone in our commitment to innovation, efficiency, and world-class service delivery.
The training was officially launched by Prof. Patience Mshenga, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Administration, Finance and Planning, who delivered a compelling message on the urgency of modernizing internal operations:
“We must modernize our operations, eliminate inefficiencies, and align with national transformation goals,” she urged, setting the tone for what became a four-day immersion in bold thinking and practical change.
The message resonated strongly with process owners across the university, including department heads and unit leaders, all of whom were driven to rethink and revamp outdated, fragmented processes that had long hindered service delivery. Through BPR, the goal is to simplify, streamline, and digitize departmental operations, thereby more effectively supporting the university's core mission of teaching, research, outreach, and community service.
Over four intensive days, participants engaged with core elements of BPR, including Process Mapping, Stakeholder Analysis, and Service Redesign and Optimization. Mr. Robert Masibo and Ms. Eddah Alwanyi, who are experienced BPR professionals from the Ministry, facilitated the training. Their insights provided not only technical guidance but also a precise alignment with national public sector reform strategies.
The training was spearheaded by Dr. Alex Kibet, from the ICT department, working closely with the Directorate of Quality Assurance and Standards. Together, they ensured smooth coordination and technical support throughout the sessions. Every process owner was challenged to take a leading role in identifying, documenting, and improving workflows within their units; a decisive shift that signals a university-wide commitment to transformation. Dr. Kibet emphasized that the future of the institution depends on the systems being redesigned today.
The Business Process Re-engineering initiative is not just a training programme; it is a university-wide call to action aimed at transforming how we work. Every department, every leader, and every process play a vital role in this journey. As Laikipia University embraces this bold step forward, we are committed to becoming a more agile, efficient, and service-oriented institution. The transformation is underway, and maintaining this momentum is key to realizing our vision for a future-ready university.
Institutional support for the BPR initiative was demonstrated by the presence of key university officials, whose attendance underscored the importance and urgency of this transformative effort. Led by Prof. Patience Mshenga, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Administration, Finance, and Planning, the others included: Prof. John Kanjogu, Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic, Research, and Student Affairs; Dr. Hezron Nyamwega, Registrar for Administration and Human Capital; Mr. Francis Wanjama, Deputy Registrar for Academic Affairs; and Prof. Felicia Yieke, Director of Corporate Affairs. Their participation signaled a strong, unified commitment from university leadership towards driving meaningful change.
