The University through the Directorate of Planning and Performance Management organized and held the Post-World Day of Remembrance of Road Crash Victims on Sunday 10th March 2024. This is an annual event held every November in memory of victims of road carnage. The theme of the Day was “Justice”. The Team comprised members of the Laikipia University Road Safety, Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention, HIV/AIDS Prevention, Disability Mainstreaming, National Cohesion and National Values, Public Complaints Resolution and Access to Information Committees, representatives from Laikipia University Students Association LUSA and Medical Department of the University. The Team attended the Sunday Service at St. Teresa of Avilla-Cherika and thereafter had the sensitization exercise at the same venue. The congregation took part in the lighting of candles in remembrance of Road Crash Victims.
The guest of the day was Mr. Chris Otieno from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) who gave a talk on road safety. He further mentioned that based on statistics, deaths arising from road crashes kill almost 1.65 million people worldwide and 90% happen in Africa and developing countries. In Kenya, we lose almost 4000 people on the road every year. He applauded the University for its effort to have pedestrian walks along the road to the university. The day was a success with a population of more than 700 students and staff attending.
