Laikipia University Launches its First Tree Growing Exercise for FY 2024/2025

In line with the Government’s commitment to grow 15 billion trees by 2032, Laikipia University launched its first tree growing exercise for FY 2024/2025 on 12th September, 2024. The launch which took place opposite the Halls Department was spearheaded by Prof. Joseph Kibett Rotich, the Vice Chancellor.

The Vice Chancellor underscored the importance of the noble course by specifically inviting women to take up the front role to ensure that the future is climate-secure and friendly.

The 15 billion tree growing campaign was launched by His Excellency President Dr. William Ruto in December, 2022. The initiative aims at increasing tree cover by 30 percent within a span of 10 years. Laikipia University, being one of the government entities, is supporting the programme by planting trees within its land in collaboration with its partners and stakeholders.

The University also encouraged its employees to grow more trees in their homes for a widespread impact in the country; denoted through the institution’s donation of tree seedlings to its members of staff and surrounding schools. The tree growing efforts aim at mitigating climate change caused by greenhouse emissions.

The event was also attended by Prof. James Ogola Onyango, Ag. Deputy Vice-Chancellor - Administration, Finance & Planning; Prof. John Kanjogu, Director - Research, Human Rights and Gender; Dr. Naftal Nyang’ara, Director - Directorate of TVET, Career Placement, Alumni and External Linkages; Rev. Fr. Dr. Peterson Kabugi - University Chaplain and Lecturer; and other members of staff drawn from different departments.
