Laikipia University Hosts Jukwaa La Wasomi: A Student-Centred Forum on Campus Safety and Security

LU Jukwaa La Wasomi

On September 26, 2025, Laikipia University, in collaboration with the Laikipia County Security Committee, held a high-level security forum titled Jukwaa La Wasomi, focusing on enhancing student safety and fostering a culture of security awareness within and beyond campus.

Held at the university boardroom, the meeting was chaired by Laikipia County Commissioner Mr. Onesmus Kyatha alongside Laikipia University Students Association (LUSA) Secretary General Mr. Titus Omari. The event brought together key stakeholders in education and regional security to engage directly with students and institutional leaders on pressing safety concerns.

Enhancing Student Security through Collaboration

The forum's primary objective was to address student safety and explore proactive measures to prevent crime and foster a secure learning environment. Security officials shared critical safety tips including:

  • Walking in groups, especially during late hours and in unfamiliar places;
  • Being alert to suspicious or threatening situations;
  • Always responding collectively to distress calls from fellow students;
  • Avoiding drug abuse, which is a major contributor to insecurity;
  • Promptly reporting life-threatening incidents to the university security department or the Dean of Students;
  • Avoiding hosting strangers in hostels and steering clear of isolated areas.

The forum emphasized that these strategies, combined with enhanced institutional protocols, would lead to significant and rapid improvements in campus safety.

A Platform for Dialogue and Student-Led Solutions

Jukwaa La Wasomi also served as a platform for student leaders to voice their concerns, share challenges, and propose actionable solutions to combat insecurity. Discussions centered on conflict resolution, crime prevention, and strategies to promote peaceful coexistence among students and surrounding communities.

The meeting set the stage for a strengthened partnership between student representatives and local security agencies. This collaboration aims to ensure that safety remains a shared responsibility and that the student voice remains central in shaping security policy on campus.

Moving Forward

As a result of this collaborative dialogue, Laikipia University expects to implement a range of security-enhancing initiatives. The institution reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with local authorities and student leaders to create a safer, more secure learning environment for all.

Jukwaa La Wasomi not only reinforced the importance of security awareness but also laid the groundwork for a more cohesive, trust-based relationship between students, educational institutions, and regional security agencies.

Wide Stakeholder Participation

The forum was attended by a diverse group of stakeholders, including: Nyahururu Deputy County Commissioner Mr. Bernard Obino and his sub-county security team; Deans of Students from Laikipia University, Laikipia East Training College, and KMTC Nyahururu Campus; Heads of Security from the participating institutions and; Student leadership from all represented institutions.
