International Women’s Day is globally celebrated on 8th March with the aim of recognizing the social economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. This year's theme, Accelerate Action focusses on the urgency of making faster, more effective strides towards gender equality. Laikipia University, through the Directorate of Human Rights and Gender, intends to mark this day by organizing a gender sensitization forum in Nyahururu Women Prison on Friday, 7th March 2025 in partnership with St Martin CSA, Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) and Pearl Hospital Nyahururu. This is because despite being our partners, collaboration is a key strategy in advancing gender inclusion and equality. This celebration goes beyond a mere event. It is an opportunity to extend compassion, empowerment, and solidarity to women in correctional facilities. It is a chance to connect, inspire, and make a meaningful impact on the lives of fellow women who need encouragement and support.
Besides being an outreach activity, this event aims to support rehabilitation and reintegration efforts. The activities for this day will include round table discussion on social-pyscho issues facing women prisoners, experts dialogue on women’s health and wellness, and women’s rights, second chance success stories and fun activities like cooking and dancing together as one community hence leaving no one behind.
Collectively, let us create a world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. #AccelerateAction.
