The Disability Mainstreaming Committee Luncheon

The Laikipia University Disability Mainstreaming Committee chaired by Dr. Florence Opondo held a luncheon with persons living with disability at the University Restaurant on 5 March, 2025.

The members, who included students and staff, came together to share their experiences, challenges, and suggestions for improving accessibility and inclusion within the university.

Dr. Florence Opondo noted that access to lecture halls, which was a serious concern from the previous luncheon, had already been resolved with the timetabling officer allocating lectures with students with disabilities in accessible halls.

She also encouraged members to sensitize more students and staff on the importance of self acceptance by registering with the Committee and the National Council For Persons With Disability (NCPWD). She reminded them of the importance of Information sharing as that can help resolve any arising matter quickly and efficiently.

On her part, Ms. Beatrice Yogo, Dean of Students implored students to take up leadership roles in the university because they're capable and hold enormous potential. As a way of empowering them, she promised to involve members from the group for the upcoming Laikipia University Students Association (LUSA) elections taking place within the month of March.

Mr. John K. Mbaka who represented the Directorate of Planning and Performance Management (DPPM) challenged the students to be aggressive in airing their plights instead of just waiting to be assisted without taking any initiative. The students were encouraged to always raise their issues with the relevant offices for assistance.
