Monitoring and Evaluation of the Teaching and Learning Environment at Laikipia University

On April 24th and 25th, 2025, officials from the Ministry of Education, State Department for Higher Education and Research, visited Laikipia University. They were received by the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Patience Mshenga. The primary objectives of the visit were to:

  1. Evaluate the overall academic and infrastructural environment at the university;
  2. Identify challenges currently affecting the university education sector; and
  3. Propose actionable solutions for improving the quality and sustainability of university education.

During their visit, the officials extensively consulted with various university stakeholders, including the University Management Board, teaching staff, non-teaching staff, and a selected group of students. Each group provided honest feedback, outlining the institution’s strengths and areas for improvement.

The visit was a valuable platform for open dialogue between the university and the Ministry of Education. The officials observed that many challenges facing Laikipia University are common across the sector but emphasized the need for a unique and strategic approach to addressing them. They encouraged the University Management to take decisive action, assuring them that working creatively within the given scope could yield positive outcomes.

The Ministry team appreciated the warm reception and the candid information shared. Mrs. Roselida Owuor underscored the Ministry’s commitment to partnering with institutions to ensure the delivery of high-quality and sustainable university education nationwide.

In his closing remarks, Prof. John Kanjogu, Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic, Research, and Student Affairs (ARSA), thanked the Ministry officials for their timely visit. He noted that Laikipia University greatly values any support to enhance its academic quality and infrastructure, as part of its broader mission to contribute globally through education, research, training, innovation, outreach, and collaboration.

During the engagement, the Ministry officials were honoured to meet members of the University Management Board (UMB), led by Prof. Patience Mshenga, Acting Vice Chancellor; Prof. John Kanjogu, Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration, Finance and Planning; Prof. Peter Mwaura, Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic, Research and Student Affairs; Prof. Robert Mwebi, Registrar, Academic Affairs; and Dr. Hezron Nyamwega, Registrar, Administration and Human Capital. The UMB was also joined by Dr. Charity Chemnjor, Director of Quality Assurance and Standards; Ms. Roselyne Mulefu, Senior Corporate Communication Officer; various Heads of Academic Departments and Examination Officers; non-teaching staff; Administrative Office Assistants; and a group of selected students.
