Welcome to the Department of Curriculum and Educational Management of Laikipia University. Thank you for visiting our homepage. We would like to interact more with our clients and therefore encourage you to visit the departmental office at the Laikipia University Main Campus. In its contribution to achievement of the university’s vision and mission, the department espouses the following core values; quality, integrity and respect.
Brief Introduction of the Department
The Laikipia University College Campus was established in 2011 as a constituent College of Egerton University, in response to the need for market-driven courses offering professional courses in the Bachelor of Education (Arts), while Bachelor of Education (Science) was domiciled in Egerton University. The department was part of the departments that constituted the School of Education in Laikipia Campus. It offers the professional courses in teacher education which are curriculum studies, pedagogy, methods of teaching, teacher education, education administration, planning and economics of education and communication technology. As of 19th February 2013, the academic programmes offered by the department include a diverse selection of diplomas, undergraduate, and postgraduate disciplines.
Vision: To be a centre of excellence in teacher education, training, research and dissemination.
Department Objectives
Departmental activities are structurally guided by the following core directives:
- To develop and offer demand-driven educational programmes aimed at addressing challenges facing the society at the local and international levels.
- To carry out research in education and innovation with the aim of enhancing the capacity of the society to address emerging issues at local and international levels.
- To improve managerial quality of educational managers.
- To create opportunities for further education and training.
- To conduct seminars, workshops and conferences in education and related fields.
Featured Academic Programmes
1. Bachelor of Education (Arts)
This four-year academic programme seeks to produce competent teachers and teacher educators for the achievement of national goals of education and development.
Admission Requirements: Mean grade of C+ (plus), C (Plain) in English, D+ (plus) in Mathematics and C+ (plus) in two teaching subjects OR a diploma with credit or distinction from an institution recognized by Laikipia University Senate.
Degree Structure: Four academic years (two semesters each). First-year includes university core courses alongside technical courses. Students specialize in two teaching subjects and undertake teaching practice after year three.

2. Bachelor of Education (Science)
A four-year academic programme aimed at producing competent graduate teachers and educators who can contribute to the achievement of national goals of education and development.
Admission Requirements: Mean grade of C+ (plus) in KCSE, with C+ in English, D+ in mathematics and at least a C+ in two teaching subjects, OR a diploma with at least a credit in a relevant subject area.
Degree Structure: Four academic years (two semesters each). Technical courses based on subject combination, professional courses, practical sessions, and exams. Includes teaching practice after year three.

3. Bachelor of Education (ECDE)
A four-year programme producing graduates who are competent educators of young children, accomplished trainers of ECDE teachers and efficient managers of ECDE institutions.
Admission Requirements: Mean grade of C+ (plus) in KCSE or a diploma in ECDE from an examining body recognized by the Senate with at least a mean grade of C (plain) in KCSE.
Degree Structure: Four academic years. Features specialized continuous assessment tests, practicals, and mandatory year two practicum alongside year three teaching practice.

4. B.Sc. in Agriculture Education & Extension
Designed to train graduates who possess both technical and professional competencies in agriculture and biology education as well as agricultural extension lines.
Admission Requirements: Score of C+ (plus) in biology/biological sciences, agriculture, geography/business, chemistry/physical sciences, physics/math and a C (plain) in English OR relevant diploma.
Degree Structure: Four academic years. Students complete university core-courses, agriculture education settings, teaching practice after year three, and field attachment after year four.

5. Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE)
A one-year academic programme aimed at producing graduates who are competent in teaching and generating knowledge within secondary schools and equivalent educational setups.
Admission Requirements: Holders of a Bachelor of Science or Arts degree or equivalent qualifications with two teaching subjects from an institution recognized by the Senate.
Degree Structure: One year across three semesters. Semester one covers pedagogy and psychology; semester two deals with planning and administration; semester three details full term teaching practice.

6. Master of Education in Educational Management

Admission Requirements: B.Ed degree Second Class Upper OR Second Class Lower with two years experience OR B.Sc/BA Second Class Upper in a relevant field paired with a valid PGDE qualification.
Degree Structure: Two years. Year one involves theoretical core coursework and comprehensive examinations. Year two consists of research proposal preparation, fieldwork data collection, and thesis creation.

7. Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Management

Admission Requirements: Must hold a master's degree in educational management from Laikipia University or any university recognized by the Senate.
Degree Structure: Year one centers around core coursework during semesters one and two. Year two and three are fully dedicated to research proposals, extensive fieldwork, publication of seminar papers, thesis compiling, and defence.
