Welcome to the Department of Curriculum and Educational Management of Laikipia University. Thank you for visiting our homepage. We would like to interact more with our clients and therefore encourage you to visit the departmental office at the Laikipia University Main Campus. In its contribution to achievement of the university’s vision and mission, the department espouses the following core values; quality, integrity and respect.
Brief Introduction of the Department
The Laikipia University College Campus was established in 2011 as a constituent College of Egerton University, in response to the need for market-driven courses offering professional courses in the Bachelor of Education (Arts), while Bachelor of Education (Science) was domiciled in Egerton University. The department was part of the departments that constituted the School of Education in Laikipia Campus. It offers the professional courses in teacher education which are curriculum studies, pedagogy, methods of teaching, teacher education, education administration, planning and economics of education and communication technology. As of 19th February 2013, the academic programmes offered by the department include the following;
- Bachelor of Education (Arts & Science) (Secondary and Primary option)
- Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Development Education) (ECDE)
- Bachelor of Science (Agricultural Education & Extension)
- Diploma in Education (Dip. Ed) Arts (Secondary option)
- Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE)
- Master of Educational Management (Administration, Planning and Economics option).
- Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Management (PhD)
Vision: To be a centre of excellence in teacher education, training, research and dissemination.
Objectives:
Departmental activities will be guided by the following objectives:
To develop and offer demand-driven educational programmes aimed at addressing challenges facing the society at the local and international levels.
To carry out research in education and innovation with the aim of enhancing the capacity of the society to address emerging issues at local and international levels.
To improve managerial quality of educational managers.
To create opportunities for further education and training.
To conduct seminars, workshops and conferences in education and related fields.
The Department of Curriculum and Educational Management hosts a number of academic programmes.
1. Bachelor of Education (Arts)
This is a four-year academic programme that seeks to produce competent teachers and teacher educators for the achievement of national goals of education and development.
Admission requirements: To be admitted into this programme, a student must have scored a mean grade of C+ (plus), C (Plain) in English, D+ (plus) in Mathematics and C+ (plus) in two teaching subjects OR a diploma with credit or distinction from an institution recognized by Laikipia University Senate.
Degree Structure: The programme takes four academic years with each year comprising two semesters. In the first year, a student takes university core courses in addition to technical courses. The student will also take technical courses based on subject combination, professional courses, Continuous Assessment Tests, practical sessions and end of semester examinations. In addition, the student will undertake teaching practice after year three. A student will specialize in teaching two subjects.
Examination: To graduate, a student must meet the graduation requirements set by the Laikipia University Senate.

Managers of education institutions (public or private)
Experts in education-related parastatals (such as KEMI, KICD)
Candidates for postgraduate education program (such as masters and doctoral studies)
2. Bachelor of Education (Science)
This is a four-year academic programme aimed at producing competent graduate teachers and educators who can contribute to the achievement of national goals of education and development.
Admission requirements: To be admitted to this programme, a candidate must have scored at least a mean grade of C+ (plus) in KCSE, with C+ in English, D+ in mathematics and at least a C+ in two teaching subjects, OR a diploma with at least a credit in a relevant subject area, from an institution recognized by Laikipia University senate.
Degree Structure: The programme takes four academic years with each year comprising two semesters. In the first year, a student takes core courses in addition to technical courses. The student will also take technical courses based on subject combination, professional courses, Continuous Assessment Tests, practical sessions and end of semester examinations. Further, the student will undertake teaching practice after year three. A student will specialize in teaching two subjects.
Examination: To graduate, a student must meet the graduation requirements set by the Laikipia University Senate.

3. Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Development and Education, ECDE)
This is a four-year programme aimed at producing graduates who are competent educators of young children, accomplished trainers of ECDE teachers and efficient managers of ECDE institutions.
Admission requirements: An applicant should be a holder of a mean grade of C+ (plus) in KCSE or diploma in ECDE from an examining body recognized by the Laikipia University Senate and at least a mean grade of C (plain) in KCSE.
Degree Structure: The programme takes four academic years with each year comprising two semesters. During each semester, a student takes Continuous Assessment Tests, practicals, and end of semester examinations. Further, a student takes practicum and teaching practice in year two and three respectively.
Examination: Before graduation, a candidate must meet the graduation requirements set by the Laikipia University Senate.

4. Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Education and Extension
This is a four-year programme whose aim is to train graduates who have both technical and professional competencies in agriculture and biology education and agricultural extension.
Admission requirements: For admission into this programme, a candidate must have scored at least a C+ (plus) in biology or biological sciences, agriculture, geography or business studies, chemistry or physical sciences, physics or Mathematics and a C (plain) in English OR a relevant diploma from a college or university recognized by the Laikipia University Senate. After admission, a student takes university common core-courses, courses in agriculture education and extension and also two teaching subjects; that is biology and agriculture, distributed in the four years. In addition, the student will undertake teaching practice after year three and field attachment after year four. The course takes four academic years and each academic year comprises two semesters.
Degree Structure: The programme takes four academic years, with each year comprising two semesters. During the semester, a student takes laboratory experiments, field activities, Continuous Assessment Tests and end of semester examinations. In addition to coursework, a student undertakes teaching practice and field attachment after 3rd and 4th years’ respectively.
Examination: To qualify for a conferment of the degree, a student must meet the graduation requirements set by the Laikipia University Senate.

5. Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE)
This is a one year academic programme aimed at producing graduates who are competent in producing competent graduates, who can contribute and create knowledge in the area of teaching and education in secondary schools and equivalent educational institutions.
Admission requirements: For admission to this programme, a candidate must be a holder of a Bachelor of Science or Arts degree or equivalent qualifications with two teaching subjects from Laikipia University or any other institution recognized by Laikipia University Senate.
Degree structure: The programme takes one year comprising three semesters. During semester one, a student will take courses on pedagogy, educational communication and technology courses as well as courses in educational psychology. In semester two, courses offered will include educational administration, educational planning and methods of teaching various courses. In semester three, the student will undertake teaching practice in a secondary school for at least one term.
Examination: Before graduation, a candidate must meet the graduation requirements set by the Laikipia University Senate.

6. Master of Education in Educational Management
This is a two year programme designed to produce educators and managers of educational institutions for the achievement of national educational goals.
Admission requirements: For admission into this programme, a candidate must be a holder of a Bachelor of Education degree of at least second class honours (upper division) OR; a holder of Bachelor of Education degree of at least second class honours (lower division), with at least two years teaching or managerial experience in the education sector OR; holder of Bachelor of Science or Arts degree of at least second class honours (upper division) in a relevant field of study plus a PGDE.
Degree structure: This programme takes two years. In year one, a candidate takes coursework which comprises theory in both common university core courses and professional courses, Continuous Assessment Test and end of semester examinations. In year two, a student prepares a research proposal, collects data and writes a thesis.
Examination: A student will be expected to pass all examinations, write a research proposal, collect data, write a thesis and successfully defend it. They will also present seminar papers, and publish academic papers.

7. Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Management
This is a three-year programme that aims at producing competent educators and managers in teacher education in the contemporary dispensation.
Admission requirements: The applicant must hold a master’s degree in education management from Laikipia University or a university recognized by Laikipia University Senate.
Degree structure: A student shall take coursework in semester one and two of year one. During year two and three, a student shall be expected to prepare a research proposal, conduct fieldwork, write a thesis and defend it successfully.
Examination: A student shall be expected to pass coursework examinations, write a research proposal, collect data, write a thesis and successfully defend it. She will also present seminar papers and publish academic papers.
