Message from the Ag.Chairperson

Currently the Department operates under the School of Education offering courses in Educational Psychology, Guidance Counselling and Educational foundations. The programmes offered are tailored to provide students with skills to promote and enhance promotion of human development, progress of human communities and equipping students with the necessary skills for the management of the learning of teaching process and students’ behaviour. The programmes aims at producing graduates with a clear understanding of the principles of human behaviour; the programmes will further enable the student to develop coping skills, self-acceptance, self-appreciation, positive self-image, self-esteem and self-dignity.

The Department offers 8 compulsory and 2 optional courses in Educational Psychology to the undergraduate students under the EPSC code. All 7 courses offered in Educational Foundations under the code of EDFO to undergraduate students are compulsory. Across the two wide disciplines, the Department trains individuals at Undergraduate Degree level, Masters Degree level and Doctoral Degree level. Presently, the department has programmes at Laikipia Main Campus.

We have several programmes in the specific areas but we are also very much involved in the servicing of students in other programmes particularly those in Education, Community Development, Early Childhood Education and Development (ECDE), Sociology, Criminology and Bachelor of Psychology. Across the two wide disciplines, the Department trains individuals at Undergraduate Degree level, Masters Degree level and Doctoral Degree level.

The Department is an active contributor to teaching, research, and dissemination of knowledge at Laikipia University and beyond. We have experts in a variety of areas (broadly Psychology and Educational Foundations) who are involved in the provision of academic services and generation of new knowledge in their disciplines.

 

Master of Education (Guidance and Counselling)

Master of Education in Guidance and Counselling programme is designed to prepare an effective professional leader and manager capable of adapting to the ever-changing environment in the Education sector and  private sector as well as Non-Governmental organizations able to work at all levels both nationally and internationally. The trained counsellor should be able  is to apply knowledge and skills acquired to counsel and guide staff, students and their parents, manage abnormal behaviour, measure different parameters related to personality and cognitive achievements In communities and teach in secondary schools and post-secondary institutions. They should also be able to train other counsellors and demonstrate ethical and professional behaviour in the workplace as well as research within the competence based curriculum framework. 

 

PhD in Guidance and Counselling

The PhD in Guidance and Counselling programme is designed to prepare an effective professional, Counsellor, capable of addressing psychological and emotional issues facing clients in the ever-changing environment and assisting them adapt with various situations in the public, private ad Non-Governmental organizations, able to work at all levels both nationally and internationally. In addition, the programme will enhance learners’ capacity to exploit opportunities for further research and training. Further, the course is designed to provide highly trained professionals in counselling within the competence-based curriculum framework capable of providing counselling services in schools, industries, religious institutions and prisons to counter emerging social ills such as drug abuse, radicalization and emotional related challenges in the society. 

While the graduates can work as guidance counsellors, a PhD in this programme will also qualify students for the following positions:

  2. Counselling researcher
  3. Program manager
  4. Master counsellor
  5. Therapist
  6. Career development counsellor
