Prof. Isaac Wanjohi King’ori
Dean, School of Education
Message from the Dean
Welcome to the School of Education. Our mission is to prepare professional educators, counsellors, agricultural extension agents, and researchers for the betterment of human welfare in a globally competitive environment. We cordially invite you to pursue your academic goals at the Laikipia University School of Education. The University Senate has given its approval for the four programmes that the school provides. A career in teaching, education and management, curriculum development, guidance and counselling, or agricultural extension education is what the programmes educate students for. In a unique sense, I believe that students would consider the school to be a home away from home. It is a centre of excellence for courses in education. The school is honoured to have won Kenya’s the Best Teacher of the year award in both 2016 and 2019.
The mission of the School of Education is to give its students the best education possible so that they can become the top teachers in the country when they graduate. The greatest and most dynamic sector of our economy is education, which provides a wealth of alternatives outside employment. The School of Education gives its students the hands-on training and practical experience they need to thrive in this quickly changing job environment. It also teaches them to be adaptable, creative, and critical thinkers.
Members of the School review their curricula in order to better meet the ever-changing needs of their customers which includes both current and potential students and employers. In order to comply with the requirements by the Ministry of Education for the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC), the Bachelor of Education curriculum is now being reviewed. Because of the focus on employability in our programmes, we are compelled to provide our students with the resources they need to meet the demands of the teaching profession. By doing this, we provide students with applicable, practical instruction that enhances their comprehension through experience learning. In order to achieve these objectives, research is becoming an increasingly important part of our programmes as we attempt to dissect and rebuild the corpus of knowledge that serves as the foundation for our instruction.
The staff members additionally publish books and research articles, organize and attend international conferences, and carry out educational research in collaboration with partners across the globe. We as a school fervently pursue our vision and mission in the service of humanity while upholding the principles of good governance and acting with professionalism at all times.
Brief Introduction of the School of Education
The School has gradually grown from the Egerton University College Campus since 1990. This was carried out in compliance with recommendations provided by a government committee tasked with determining the most effective ways to manage a double intake of secondary school students with grades of ‘O’ and ‘A’. The objective was to offer graduate-level education courses for teacher preparation. Since then, the school has expanded its staff and student body to over 5,000 (five thousand) registered students participating in various programmes, making it the largest school. Students from the school of education make up half of the university’s student body.
The School of Education is made up of two academic departments: the **Department of Curriculum and Education Management** and the **Department of Psychology, Counselling, and Education Foundations**. The school currently offers a variety of postgraduate degree programmes; a Diploma in Education (Arts) program; and four (4) Bachelor of Education degree programmes. The Bachelor of Psychology degree is offered by the Department of Social Science in the School of Humanities and Developmental Studies (HDS), which is serviced by the Department of Psychology, Counselling, and Education Foundations of the School of Education.
The school envisions itself as a globally competitive hub for producing highly qualified teachers, counsellors, agricultural extension agents, and researchers to improve the well-being of people. The four programmes that the school provides have received approval from the University Senate. Students can prepare for professions in teaching, guidance and counselling, education and management, curriculum development, and agricultural extension education through these programmes.
