Message from the Chairperson

Welcome to Commerce department. This is an excellence-oriented department that deals with business related programmes and activities. The department offers quality academic needs; excellent integrated teaching approaches in various programmes and imparts knowledge as well as social values for overall development of students and staff. Students in the department are exposed to business related courses and programmes that enable them to have a substantial and dignified source of livelihood after completion of their education. The department also produces high quality research works from both students and lecturers. We would like to wish all students joining the department all the very best in their studies and we hope that together, each one of us will take the name of our university to greater heights.

Brief Introduction of the Department

Commerce Department hosts two undergraduate programmes. These are Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Agribusiness programmes as well as a Master of Business Administration and Doctor of Philosophy in Business Administration. The programmes offered have integrated sub-disciplines of business and management which enables students to develop analytical skills useful for solving problems and making decisions in the business environment. The department has eight (8) qualified academic staff who support the mission of serving students and society through research, education, scholarship, training, innovation, outreach and consultancy. The graduates from the department are very competitive in the market and frequently become professional accountants, actuaries, financial and marketing analysts, managers of companies and proprietors of small businesses among others. The lecturers are committed to providing fundamental business skills to the students and society at large. The department collaborates with other departments and organizations in research and other activities. 

Vision and Objectives

Commerce Department contributes to the valued transformation of society

The department aims at achieving the following objectives: 

1. To increase the number of research publications from 10 to 15 by June, 2024;

2. To collaborate in at least one collaborative research by December, 2024;

3. To reduce the missing marks to 3 percent of the total reported cases; 

4. To establish linkages with other institutions through research and programmes;

5. To develop at least 1 new academic programme and review a PhD programme;

6. To develop a mentorship program; and

7. To participate  in at least one (1) outreach / extension services to neighboring agribusinesses.

Activities and News

The Department has trained over 100 students on Entrepreneurship in Agriculture. This programme has attracted many students with diverse backgrounds from different schools. The department is about to launch short courses on entrepreneurship and small business and project management.
