Message from the Chairperson

Established in 2011 within the School of Science and Applied Technology, the Department boasts a robust and qualified academic staff specializing in diverse branches of biology. We are positioned as an ideal center of excellence for Biological and Biomedical Sciences training, research, and consultancy.

The department couples a dynamic learning environment with well-equipped modern laboratories. Furthermore, we host the Laikipia University Botanic Garden—a premier living resource adjacent to an intact natural forest. Intersected by pristine streams, springs, and wetlands, this vibrant natural ecosystem functions as an active laboratory, inspiring our ongoing commitment to environmental conservation, field research, and the development of a vibrant postgraduate community in Public Health (with IT) and Plant Pathology.

Departmental Research Strengths

Our faculty and students engage in cross-cutting research of vital socio-economic importance both in Kenya and globally. Academic investigations focus primarily on:

Health, Disease & Immunology
Parasitology & Microbiology
Ecology, Limnology & Wetlands
Plant Pathology & Physiology
Bioinformatics & Computational Biology

Opportunities for Graduates

The B.Sc. in Biomedical Sciences and Technology program is specifically structured to equip graduates with the professional competencies required to manage biomedical information systems, apply advanced biotechnology tools to real-world challenges, and spearhead scientific research or teaching initiatives.

At Laikipia University, we train our students to master self-directed learning, complex problem solving, and crisp technical communication. By offering deep foundational insights into biochemical sciences, computational biology, large data analysis, and multidisciplinary molecular sciences, we ensure our graduates possess the functional expertise needed to build impactful careers in medical research, laboratory management, healthcare parastatals, and global biotechnology sectors.
