
Official Project Launch
The project was officially launched at a five-day physical kick-off workshop held from 26–30 January 2026 at the University of Nairobi, bringing together partner institutions and stakeholders to align on vision, governance, work packages, and implementation strategy.
About the Project
Laikipia University is proud to be part of the AgriOPEN Project, a major international partnership developing a Nationwide AgriOPEN Campus (AOC). This open education platform focuses on sustainable agriculture and entrepreneurship, linking higher education institutions, government, and national qualifications bodies to strengthen Kenya's agricultural education ecosystem through open and distance learning.
Project Objectives
- Establish a nationwide Agri Open Campus platform for sustainable agriculture and entrepreneurship.
- Expand access to accredited, competence-based learning through ODL.
- Develop and deliver quality-assured agricultural and entrepreneurship curricula.
- Strengthen cross-sectoral collaboration between universities, government, and industry.
- Align provision with national qualification frameworks and recognition of prior learning (RPL).
- Promote inclusive, lifelong learning contributing to employment and food security.
Expected Outcomes
- A functional, nationally recognized Agri Open Campus offering flexible ODL.
- New and improved competence-based courses developed collaboratively.
- Stronger cross-sectoral networks linking higher education, government, and industry.
- Established governance, quality assurance, and monitoring mechanisms.
- Increased access to accredited learning opportunities across Kenya.
- Enhanced institutional capacity and international collaboration.
About the Consortium
The AgriOPEN Consortium is coordinated by the University of Nairobi and comprises eight partner institutions from Kenya and Europe:

Laikipia University plays a core academic role by leading Work Package 4 (Cross-sectoral Collaboration, Learning Ecosystem and Networks) and co-leading Work Package 3 (Content and Course Development).
